"Card fraud and in particular the skimming/cloning of cards remains a grave concern and we have experienced a change on this front with the operations now being more advanced and happening at a bigger scale." So says Ingrid Veueza Katjiukua, Forensics FNB Namibia Ltd.She continued to say that these skimming devices came in various forms, but increasing in popularity in Namibia were the hand held devices, which are used by a waiter, cashier, intruder at an ATM or at a point of sale (speed point)."However it seems as if the fraudsters always remain one step ahead and FNB recently discovered a high-tech skimming device disguised as a POS (Point of Sale) terminal. The introduction of these ghost terminals in the market is an alarming concern as these devices are so well disguised and clients, as well as FNB staff members, would not be able to tell the difference between a real terminal and a ghost terminal until it's too late."FNB Namibia has given a few pointers to identify a POS skimming device and these include:
  • The machine does not connect to the merchants' normal system and if switched on the first screen that opens up shows the wording: "Download needed".
  • Nobody else would be able to use the terminal other than the person who brought the device to the merchant as one needs to press one of the "F" keys on the side to "activate" the device.
  • When the client wants to pay for services the culprit will first use the altered device.
  • He will first swipe the card and then dip the card (if it is a chip card).
  • He will then proceed to add details as prompted by the device.
  • When prompted he will then hand the device to the client for the clients' pin.
  • The device captures the card data and stores the pin automatically for later retrieval.
  • The device will then take a few minutes and will print a slip showing that there was a communication failure.
  • The culprit will then take the merchants legitimate POS device to conclude a valid transaction.
FNB also said that customers should watch out for the following on the slips:
  • Two slips after each transaction are printed which are marked as customer copy and merchant copy
  • The slip will have the date and time, with a receipt number, last four digits of the card number, customer name and amount of transaction and the wording communication failure/ error.
  • The merchant name is not on the slip as the ghost terminal isn't configured to that specific merchant and the Currency indicator is normally CHF
